Meet the Executive

Jennifer Fisher, President: I learned to swim as a kid through the red cross.  When I entered my forties I found that my physical health had deteriorated.   With a history of females with heart disease in my family I decided it was time to get fit.  Over the last four years with the guidance of a great coach my cardiovascular fitness is better than it has ever been.   Swimming across my parents' lake used to be a feat that was impossible, now it is a mere warm-up.  I enjoy the encouragement and support that all of the team members provide.

Denyse Cowling, Vice President:

Susan Ruginis, Secretary:

John Strang, Meet Manager: I have been with the Burlington Masters since 1996. I had previously swum competitively when I was a child, as a summer swimmer in BC, but that was 20 years earlier. I found the first few practices very tough and I had no idea what I was doing, what the drills were or which way to swim. However, I stuck with it and my swimming has been improving ever since. The Burlington Masters is a great group. They are supportive, encouraging and motivating. The workouts remain tough and though our coach would still say that I have no idea what I am doing or what the drills are I couldn’t imagine not swimming. I would like to encourage everyone to participate in all the aspects the club has to offer, from practices, to swim meets, to social events, to extracurricular training activities. This will be my third year on the executive.

Petra Haneberry , Social Coordinator:

Jason Smith, Publicity: My past experiences in the pool are few and far between. I took swim lessons as a child but soon became bored with them (Who wants to float and tread water anyways?). My next experience with non-recreational swimming happened in my last year of high school when I joined the swim team. I loved competing even though just about everyone in the senior category was faster than me. After graduating from university and not swimming for a number of years, I started looking for fun way to lose all those party pounds and came across the BMSC web site. I decided to give it a try but convinced myself that I wouldn't be competing, which Coach Dave wouldn't hear of. I swam at the 2002 Ontario Provincial Championships and even though most men in my age group were faster than me, I still loved the competition. I had to quit the team after that year as I relocated for work. I moved back to the area last summer and one of the first tasks I did was sign up with BMSC again. I'm still not the fastest (don't think I'll ever be) but the training, competition and social aspects of the club are what keeps me coming back, hopefully for a longer term this time.
